Travel to Kenai

First ventures

June 2025

Frankoma ready at the take off for his second visit to Alaska. B’s float plane course is taking place over five days. I got to tag along, which was the backup plan. The original plan, my folks were to meet me in Anchorage. We’d plan to ride the train from Anchorage to Seward. Staying in Palmer was hoped for and make the long drive to Denali National Park to get their park stamps, but…

Alas, life happened and not unexpectedly my father passed away prior to the trip.

B and I breath the cool mountain air a bit deeper, soak in the sunlight glistening off turquoise lakes and enjoy majestic mountain views. Dad would have loved Alaska, plenty of people watching, listening to songbirds and so many choices for hikes / walks. We’ll have to plan for mom to come with us or maybe a mother/daughter(s) trip.

On my travels I’m hunting books to complete multiple series that my dad and I read. I thought it would be a simple bookstore in Anchorage, the one I strategically picked on the way out of town. I realized my mistake too late, but was determined to overlook the target audience of home schoolers. I did find a book, the Scarlet Pimpernel (not really on my list) and I got a couple of teas. I’m hoping my luck in Seward is better in book browsing. We didn’t spend much time in Anchorage.

Onward! We momentarily stopped in Girdwood just outside of Anchorage. Alyseka Resort was gearing up for the summer season replacing the ski lifts for bike lifts. I was pleasantly surprised to find cards from Alaska artist, Meg Smith. She was the design artist for the Great Aviation Gathering we attended the last time we visited AK.

Frankoma wanted a mental break from the debacle of the Hwy 1 and Alyeska Hwy gas station. A popular spot for all travelers just leaving Anchorage.
Kenai!

We got to the town of Moose Pass with plenty of daylight…… out of habit, I brought my headlamp haha. We had a lovely dinner at the Trail Lake Lodge and meandered a bit down by the water.

The next morning we touched base with the flight school and had some time before our ‘check-in’ for our rented cabin on the property. We ventured down to the port town of Seward – the beginning of the Iditarod Race. Seward is a deep water bay, ideal for the cruise ships – ensure paying attention to docking schedules.

At the tip of Seward, AK near the Iditarod statue. B took a great photo here.

We headed back to check into the cabin and B had his first lesson at 4pm. We enjoyed the cold, cold water of Trail Lake just standing knee deep. Some boys from a summer camp were having fun jumping off the railroad bridge just south of the lake. All in all a good first couple of days!

B coming in from the first lesson.

The trip isn’t over – more photos to come!
